Can Adults Get Braces? Is It Worth It in 2026?

Yes, adults can absolutely get braces, and for most people, it’s worth it. Adult braces correct alignment, bite, and spacing issues at any age, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, roughly 1 in 4 orthodontic patients today is an adult . Modern options like clear aligners and ceramic brackets make treatment more discreet than ever, while the benefits (improved confidence, better oral health, and reduced jaw strain) last a lifetime.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s too late to straighten your smile, here’s the good news: age is never a barrier. Whether you’re 25 or 65, orthodontic treatment can work for you. At David McInnis Orthodontics, we’ve helped countless adults across the Upstate community get started with confidence.

What Are Adult Braces?

Adult braces are orthodontic appliances designed to straighten teeth and correct bite issues in patients whose jaws and teeth have fully developed. While the appliances themselves are largely the same as those used for teens, the treatment approach is often tailored to the unique needs of adult mouths.

Unlike children and teens, adults have finished growing, which means tooth movement happens through fully mature bone. This can sometimes mean slightly longer treatment times, but it doesn’t reduce the effectiveness of orthodontic care. Adults also tend to bring more existing dental work into the picture, things like fillings, crowns, bridges, or implants, all of which the orthodontist will plan around.

There are several types of adult braces available today, including traditional metal braces, tooth-colored ceramic braces, lingual braces hidden behind the teeth, and clear aligners like Invisalign. Each option works toward the same goal: a healthier, straighter smile that supports better function and confidence.

Adult orthodontics has grown rapidly in popularity over the past two decades. Discreet treatment options, flexible scheduling, and a stronger focus on adult-friendly care have made it easier than ever to get started, no matter your age or lifestyle. At David McInnis Orthodontics, our valued patients range from young professionals to grandparents, all working toward a smile they are proud of.

How Adult Braces Work: The Treatment Process

Getting braces as an adult follows a straightforward process. It starts with a free consult where your orthodontist examines your teeth, takes X-rays, and uses 3D digital scans to map your smile. At David McInnis Orthodontics, we use iTero digital scanners for precise, comfortable imaging, no goopy impressions required.

Our Board Certified Orthodontists, Dr. McInnis and Dr. Lanford, then create an individualized treatment plan. This plan outlines your timeline, the type of appliance that fits your needs, and your specific goals.

Here’s what happens during treatment:

  1. Appliance placement: Your braces or aligners are fitted to your teeth
  2. Gradual movement: Gentle, consistent pressure shifts teeth into position over time
  3. Regular adjustments: You’ll visit the office every 4-8 weeks for progress checks
  4. Active treatment completion: Most adults finish in 12-36 months, depending on complexity
  5. Retention phase: Custom retainers keep your results in place for years to come

The process is simple. Your orthodontist handles the technical work while you show up for appointments and follow care instructions. With latest technology and a supportive team guiding every step, upgrading your smile is easy.

Benefits of Getting Braces as an Adult

Adult braces do more than straighten teeth. They improve your quality of life in ways that matter every single day.

How Do Braces Boost Confidence?

Many adults report life-changing boosts in self-esteem after treatment. Smiling without hesitation changes how you interact with the world, in meetings, photos, first dates, and everyday conversations across the Upstate community.

Can Adult Braces Improve Bite Function?

Correcting your bite reduces jaw strain and can ease TMJ discomfort. You’ll chew more efficiently and put less stress on your joints, which pays off over decades of daily use.

Are Straight Teeth Easier to Clean?

Yes. Straight teeth are simpler to brush and floss. This lowers your risk of cavities, gum disease, and long-term dental issues, supporting better overall health.

Do Braces Prevent Future Dental Issues?

Crowding and shifting tend to worsen over time. Addressing these things now prevents more complex treatment later, saving you time, effort, and expense down the road.

Are There Discreet Options for Adults?

Clear aligners and ceramic brackets blend with your smile. Most people won’t notice you’re in treatment unless you tell them, making adult orthodontics a great fit for professional settings.

The investment pays off for decades. A healthy, aligned smile supports your overall well-being, not just your appearance.

Adult Braces vs. Invisalign: Which Is Right for You?

Metal braces work best for complex cases, ceramic braces offer subtle aesthetics, lingual braces stay invisible behind the teeth, and Invisalign provides removable flexibility for mild to moderate cases. The right choice depends on your lifestyle, budget, and the specifics of your alignment needs. Here’s how the options compare:

Treatment Type Visibility Best For Relative Cost
Metal Braces Most visible Complex cases, severe crowding Most affordable
Ceramic Braces Tooth-colored, subtle Moderate cases, aesthetic concerns Moderate
Lingual Braces Hidden behind teeth Full invisibility priority Highest
Invisalign Clear, removable Mild to moderate cases Moderate to high

Metal braces remain the most effective option for complex orthodontic cases. They handle severe crowding, significant bite issues, and challenging tooth movements with precision.

Ceramic braces work like metal braces but use tooth-colored brackets. They’re less noticeable while still handling moderate to complex cases.

Lingual braces attach to the back of your teeth. They’re completely invisible from the front, though they require more adjustment time for your tongue.

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners. They’re ideal for adults who want flexibility, you can take them out to eat, brush, and floss. They work best for mild to moderate alignment issues.

Treatment time varies by complexity, not just the appliance you choose. Your orthodontist will recommend the option that fits your specific needs during your free consult.

Is Getting Braces as an Adult Worth the Cost?

Adult braces typically range from $3,000 to $8,000 , depending on your case complexity and the type of appliance you choose. Here’s a general breakdown:

Treatment Type Typical Cost Range
Metal Braces $3,000 – $6,000
Ceramic Braces $4,000 – $7,000
Invisalign $3,500 – $7,500
Lingual Braces $6,000 – $10,000

What affects the price?

  • Case complexity: More severe issues require longer treatment
  • Treatment length: Extended timelines add to the total cost
  • Appliance type: Lingual braces and Invisalign tend to cost more than metal
  • Geographic region: Prices vary by area

Making treatment affordable:

Many dental insurance plans now include adult orthodontic coverage. Check with your provider to see what’s included. HSA and FSA funds can also reduce your out-of-pocket expenses for our valued patients.

At David McInnis Orthodontics, we think orthodontics should be simple & affordable for everyone. We offer a payment calculator on our website and low monthly payment options to help you get started without financial stress.

Are You a Good Candidate for Adult Braces?

Most adults qualify for orthodontic treatment. The main requirement is healthy teeth and gums. At David McInnis Orthodontics, our team evaluates each adult patient individually to find the right fit.

You’re likely a good candidate if:

  • Your teeth and gums are in good overall health
  • You’ll maintain oral hygiene during treatment
  • You can attend regular adjustment appointments
  • You want to correct crowding, spacing, or bite issues

What about existing dental work?

Crowns, bridges, and even implants don’t automatically disqualify you. Your orthodontist will evaluate your specific situation and create a plan that works around existing restorations.

What might delay treatment?

Active gum disease needs to be addressed before starting braces. Your orthodontist may refer you to a periodontist first. Bone density and overall health are also evaluated during your free consult.

The bottom line? Age alone is never a barrier. If you’re motivated to improve your smile, there’s likely a path forward for you, and our #teamDMO orthodontist is happy to help you map it out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Adult Braces

Is it too late to get braces as an adult?

It’s never too late. Adults of all ages successfully complete orthodontic treatment. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, braces or aligners can work for you. At David McInnis Orthodontics, many of our valued patients in their 40s, 50s, and beyond achieve excellent results.

How long do adults wear braces compared to teens?

Adult treatment typically takes 12-36 months, which is similar to teen treatment. Adults may experience slightly longer timelines because their bones are fully developed, but the difference is often minimal. Your specific timeline depends on case complexity, not your age.

Do adult braces hurt more than teen braces?

Discomfort is similar for adults and teens. You’ll feel pressure after adjustments, but it’s manageable with over-the-counter relief. Most patients describe it as mild soreness that fades within a few days. Modern braces are more comfortable than older versions.

Will braces affect my work or social life?

Most adults find braces fit easily into their routines. Clear aligners and ceramic brackets are subtle enough for professional settings. Many people won’t notice your braces unless you point them out. Treatment appointments are typically quick and can be scheduled around your work hours.

Can I get braces if I have crowns, bridges, or implants?

Yes. Existing dental work doesn’t prevent orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist will design a plan that accommodates crowns, bridges, or implants. Brackets can be bonded to crowns, and treatment can work around implants since they don’t move like natural teeth.

Does insurance cover adult orthodontic treatment?

Many dental insurance plans include adult orthodontic benefits. Coverage varies by plan, so check with your provider for specifics. Even partial coverage can significantly reduce your costs. HSA and FSA funds are another way for our valued patients in the Upstate community to save on treatment expenses.

Our 5-Star Experience

Connie R.
Great people to work with! The process is smooth and they are able to accommodate preferences. Their online form makes it easy to adjust payment preferences and sign a contract, etc.. The online contract and payment system is fairly simple to use however, it is optimized for use on a laptop, which is what I would recommend for filling out the form. My kids have had a great experience with them. My daughter has completed phase both phases of braces and my son completed phase one. The only reason we won’t continue with them for my son’s phase 2 is because we moved to NC. We’ve been delighted to work with this group.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Connie! We are so happy to hear when our patients and their families have a great experience with us! We can't wait to see how your daughter's smile continues to transform, and we're excited to get started with your son's journey!

The best experience I’ve had in a long time! I say that because I was diagnosed with colon cancer on Wednesday March 13, 2025. My world was changed as I knew it. I had braces but had to stop my visits due to surgery and chemotherapy treatments. I saw horrific stories where patients lost not only their hair, but their teeth. That was not my story. Dr. McInnis said “I treat all my patients like family.” Monday, I became a family member. I was nervous, scared, and afraid of what the outcome would be. Or the damage my chemotherapy had done. There was none. I was even afraid of my nausea that comes and goes. I got a little weak while there, but they made me feel that it was a “safe space” to have my moment. That was what I was looking for, and received. To be honest, before I arrived I thought about finding another location that would be closer. After my experience, the warm welcome, the care, and most importantly the ambiance inside did it! I knew that was the place I needed to be. Going through chemotherapy as a cancer patient is hard enough. Then I suffered a heart attack twice in April 2026. The last thing I needed was stress about my smile. As a Pastor, I’m in front of people often. This was another weight lifted off of my shoulders. A huge THANK YOU to the staff for being so amazing. You never know what someone is going through until you hear their voice. I’m grateful for each of you while I walk out my journey.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for your deeply kind words and for taking the time to share your experience with us. Our absolute priority is to provide a warm, welcoming, and safe environment where every individual feels fully supported, cared for, and heard. We are incredibly grateful for your trust in our team and are honored to be a part of your journey. Your support means the world to all of us, and we look forward to continuing to provide you with the highest level of care.

What a wonderful experience we had getting started with my kids braces!!! Dr David McInnis and his team were amazing and my kids felt at ease!! From the minute we walked in the door, his Treatment Coordinator Sarah made us feel right at home!! My kids names were highlighted on a Welcome board which instantly made them feel special!! She gave us a grand tour of the office that made us feel right at home!!! We then met Kristin who was both amazingly professional and incredibly kind! She helped both of my children feel at home while she and Sarah took their x-rays and photos! Dr McInnis then gave us a his consultation as to what he felt our children needed. He was fantastic! He gave us a clear explanation of what he thought they needed and answered all of our questions. We felt so comfortable we decided to go ahead with our treatment! Kristin escorted us to the treatment area and she and Dr McInnis put the braces on to my children's excitement!! After they were done, they treated the kids to plenty of goodies to help take care of their braces and special treats for themselves as well! Best Surprise for the kids was Dipping Dots as they left with their new braces!! Yum!! But that's not all, our youngest child was pleased to find out that she is now a member of Dr McInnis's rookie team!!! She gets special prizes each time they go!! She can't wait for her siblings next appointment and for Dr McInnis to put braces on her one day!!! What a special office!! We look forward to a relationship with them for years to come!! They are not the most convenient office to our house, but man was it worth the drive!!! As a dental professional myself, I have high expectations for an orthodontist!! Dr David McInnis and his team, specifically Sarah and Kristin, knocked it out of the park!!! We couldn't be more thrilled with their office and would highly recommend them!!!
Response from the owner:Thank you for recognizing the dedication of our wonderful team. We always aim to provide clear explanations and top-tier service. Your positive review is greatly appreciated!

Love, love, love Dr. McInnis!!! My daughter had severe overcrowding and a terrible under bite. I was worried about having to have teeth extracted or possibly oral surgery of some sort, but at her consultation Dr. McInnis was very confident that none of that would be necessary. Fast forward almost 2 ½ years, she got her braces off today and has the straightest, most beautiful smile. She is so excited and proud of her new smile. We are thrilled with the work Dr. McInnis has done. He definitely is top notch in his profession! I highly recommend going to see him for all your orthodontic needs. 💜
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for your very kind review! It was our absolute pleasure treating your daughter! We are so pleased that you are happy! 😁
