Mouthguards In Anderson & Easley, SC

Home » Other Treatments » Mouthguards

Protecting your smile while playing sports is essential when you have braces. Mouthguards help protect your teeth and gums from injury. If you participate in basketball, boxing, hockey, football, gymnastics, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, rugby, track and field, skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding, skydiving, soccer, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, or wrestling, it is recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists that you wear a mouthguard.

Types Of Mouthguards

Choosing the right mouthguard is essential. There are three basic types of mouthguards: the pre-made mouthguard, the “boil-and-bite” fitted mouthguard, and a custom-made mouthguard from your orthodontist. When you choose a mouthguard, be sure to pick one that is tear-resistant, comfortable and well fitted for your mouth, easy to keep clean, and does not prevent you from breathing properly.

Pre-made mouthguards and boil-and-bite mouthguards can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, while custom-made mouthguards are specially designed by your orthodontist to provide optimal protection against mouth injuries. If you wear braces or a retainer, it is imperative for you to wear a mouthguard during contact sports. Your doctor can show you how to wear a mouthguard properly and how to choose the right mouthguard to protect your smile.

Taking Care Of Your Mouthguard

Similar to a retainer, braces, or any other special dental appliance, it is important to take care of your mouthguard by storing it properly and keeping it clean, as well as knowing when to replace your old mouthguard with a new one. Here are a few simple ways to keep your mouthguard clean and working correctly:

  • Gently scrub your mouthguard after each use with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Store your mouthguard in a protective case.
  • Do not leave your mouthguard in the sun or in hot water, because it may melt or become deformed.
  • Replace your mouthguard at the beginning of every new sports season. You should also replace your mouthguard if you notice it has become worn and no longer fits properly.
  • Do not wear a retainer with your mouthguard. If you wear braces, your dentist will help design a mouthguard to protect your teeth and your braces.
  • Do not chew on or cut pieces off of your mouthguard. Mouthguards come in different shapes and sizes; ask your dentist which is best for you.
  • Bring your mouthguard to each dental checkup, so your dentist can check to make sure it’s still in good shape!

Sports-related injuries to the mouth and jaw are some of the most common injuries incurred by athletes. Our goal is to help minimize your chances of a sports-related injury to your smile. Be sure to ask your orthodontist about mouthguards at your next appointment — GO TEAM!

Our 5-Star Experience

April C.
What a wonderful experience we had getting started with my kids braces!!! Dr David McInnis and his team were amazing and my kids felt at ease!! From the minute we walked in the door, his Treatment Coordinator Sarah made us feel right at home!! My kids names were highlighted on a Welcome board which instantly made them feel special!! She gave us a grand tour of the office that made us feel right at home!!! We then met Kristin who was both amazingly professional and incredibly kind! She helped both of my children feel at home while she and Sarah took their x-rays and photos! Dr McInnis then gave us a his consultation as to what he felt our children needed. He was fantastic! He gave us a clear explanation of what he thought they needed and answered all of our questions. We felt so comfortable we decided to go ahead with our treatment! Kristin escorted us to the treatment area and she and Dr McInnis put the braces on to my children's excitement!! After they were done, they treated the kids to plenty of goodies to help take care of their braces and special treats for themselves as well! Best Surprise for the kids was Dipping Dots as they left with their new braces!! Yum!! But that's not all, our youngest child was pleased to find out that she is now a member of Dr McInnis's rookie team!!! She gets special prizes each time they go!! She can't wait for her siblings next appointment and for Dr McInnis to put braces on her one day!!! What a special office!! We look forward to a relationship with them for years to come!! They are not the most convenient office to our house, but man was it worth the drive!!! As a dental professional myself, I have high expectations for an orthodontist!! Dr David McInnis and his team, specifically Sarah and Kristin, knocked it out of the park!!! We couldn't be more thrilled with their office and would highly recommend them!!!
Response from the owner:Thank you for recognizing the dedication of our wonderful team. We always aim to provide clear explanations and top-tier service. Your positive review is greatly appreciated!

Love, love, love Dr. McInnis!!! My daughter had severe overcrowding and a terrible under bite. I was worried about having to have teeth extracted or possibly oral surgery of some sort, but at her consultation Dr. McInnis was very confident that none of that would be necessary. Fast forward almost 2 ½ years, she got her braces off today and has the straightest, most beautiful smile. She is so excited and proud of her new smile. We are thrilled with the work Dr. McInnis has done. He definitely is top notch in his profession! I highly recommend going to see him for all your orthodontic needs. 💜
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for your very kind review! It was our absolute pleasure treating your daughter! We are so pleased that you are happy! 😁

The best Orthodontics Office, they truly care about what you want and need for your teeth. Personally, Daisy made getting the braces off the most smoothest and easiest process. I struggle with getting molds and it was a breeze was her. Overall, the staff and environment is all amazing !

I’ve had an outstanding experience with this orthodontic practice. The team is incredibly friendly and welcoming, which makes every visit comfortable and stress-free. What really sets them apart is how much time they take to walk you through your treatment plan. They explain everything clearly and make sure you fully understand the process, options, and expected outcomes. That level of communication builds a lot of trust and confidence. Throughout the treatment, they do a great job of keeping you informed on progress and next steps, so you always know what to expect. It’s clear they prioritize both quality of care and the patient experience. It’s also great that they allow a parent to go back with the child. If you’re looking for a top notch orthodontic team that truly cares and delivers exceptional results, I would highly recommend this team!
Response from the owner:😁 Thank you so much for your 5 star review! We love what we do and are thrilled that your family has felt cared for in our office!

Benefits of Using Mouthguards

Mouthguards play a crucial role in protecting your teeth and gums during sports activities, especially for individuals with braces. They act as a barrier that absorbs the impact of blows to the face, significantly reducing the risk of dental injuries such as fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue damage.

In addition to preventing injuries, mouthguards can also help in minimizing the risk of concussions by stabilizing the jaw and reducing the force transmitted to the brain. This protective gear is essential for athletes in contact sports, providing peace of mind for both players and their parents.

Choosing the Right Mouthguard for Braces

Selecting the appropriate mouthguard is vital for anyone undergoing orthodontic treatment. Custom-made mouthguards, designed by your orthodontist, are often the best choice as they provide a precise fit, ensuring maximum comfort and protection while accommodating braces.

When choosing a mouthguard, consider factors like material quality and thickness. A well-fitted mouthguard should not only protect your teeth but also allow for easy breathing and speaking, making it a practical choice for athletes in active sports.

Common Mouthguard Care Mistakes

Proper care of your mouthguard is essential to maintain its effectiveness and hygiene. One common mistake is neglecting to clean the mouthguard regularly, which can lead to bacterial growth and bad odors. Rinsing it with water after each use and using a mild soap for thorough cleaning can prevent these issues.

Another mistake is improper storage. Mouthguards should be kept in a ventilated case to prevent moisture buildup, which can harbor bacteria. Avoid leaving them in hot places, such as a car, as heat can distort the shape and fit of the mouthguard.

When to Replace Your Mouthguard

Knowing when to replace your mouthguard is crucial for ongoing protection. Signs that it’s time for a new mouthguard include visible wear and tear, such as cracks or thinning, which can compromise its protective capabilities.

Additionally, if you notice discomfort or if your mouthguard no longer fits snugly due to changes in your braces or teeth alignment, it’s time to consult your orthodontist for a replacement. Regular check-ups can help ensure your mouthguard continues to provide the protection you need.
